I found out yesterday that my favorite author, Michael Crichton, died of cancer at the age of 66 on Tuesday.
i was shocked at the news. i was in the kitchen when my mom called me saying he died, my first reaction... "are you sure it was michael crichton?"
For those that don't know, Michael Crichton always inserted a lot of scientific facts into his books, along with suspense and sometimes horror. Kind of like reading your school science book only with a plot and characters. Crichton always wrote about technology gone wrong, whether it's the resurrection of dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park," or killer nanobots with a mind of their own like in "Prey." The plots in his books combined with the scientific facts make the events taking place in them seem very possible that they can happen. This way of writing had given him the title: "King of the Techno-Thriller"
Crichton is most likely best known for his amazing novel, Jurassic Park and its sequel, The Lost World. It was because of the movie that I picked up the book and that's when I became a huge fan of him and his work. (The books are a thousand times better by the way, ESPECIALLY "The Lost World").
Some other works he has done include: Twister, Congo, Timeline, The Andromeda Strain, Sphere, The 13th Warrior/Eaters of the Dead, and Prey. He is also the creator of the tv series, ER.
These, however, are my favorites by him:
Jurassic Park: From the back of the book
An astonishing technique for recovering and cloning dinosaur DNA has been discovered. Now, one of mankind's most thrilling fantasies has come true. Creatures extinct for eons now roam Jurassic Park with their awesome presence and profound mystery and all the world can visit them-- for a price. Until something goes wrong...
In Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton taps all of his mesmerizing talent and scientific brilliance to create his most electrifying techno-thriller yet
The Lost World From the back of the book
It is now six years since the secret disaster at Jurassic Park, six years since the extraordinary dream of science and imagination came to a crashing end--the dinosaurs destroyed, the park dismantled, and the island indefinitely closed to the public. There are rumors that something has survived...
And I can't forget to mention my number one favorite book by him:
Prey From the back of the book
In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles--micro-robots-- has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive.
It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour. Every attempt to destroy it has failed. And we are the prey.

There is one more book of his that he had just finished that will be coming out in 2009; you know I'll be checking it out.
It's very sad to see such a great writer die. To me, there is no author like him, and there never will be another like him.
The fanlisting will be getting a new layout, plus i also made a da stamp in honor of him
